The Croydon SDA Gospel Choir ....singing a new song since 1979, is one of the country's most loved gospel choirs. Easy thing to say, and nice PR for the web-site!
Not quite! The Choir is known for its willingness to be uncompromising in its message, its refusal to be pigeon-holed into a definite style. It is quite avant-garde in its approach, fusing diverse musical styles, singing contemporary style whilst maintaining traditional four and eight part choral textures, performing in Latin as well as Latin American,Malawian music,Nigerian music, and one could go on all day.
As a finalist in 1994 in the Choir Of The Year and quarter finalist in th esame in 1992, the choir, which is simply a "regular church choir" in terms of its set-up, has been seen as something of a success story.
Its performance of Vivaldi's "Gloria" (the whole work) with the London Mozart Players was hailed a 'superlative performance' in the press.By contrast the choir was seen to bring depth of soul to its many 'Songs Of Praise' appearances, where it often appeared in a double-choir act with Kingdom Choir.
The choir has been privileged to work on TV with gospel's best: Andrae Crouch, Sandra Crouch, Donnie McClurkin,Jessy Dixon, Gloria Gaynor, to name but a few. The choir has also appeared on EastEnders, and was part of the history with the BBC Television's live show 'Flashmob: The Opera", an opera performed live from Paddington Train Station and broadcast on TV.
The choir's innovation is evident in its formation of its not-for-profit recording arm, CGC Music, which has enabled the choir to produce several projects, with very decent budgets.
The choir never hides the fact that it is fundemantally about telling the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ, with a strong emphasis on the core tenet of each singer in the choir: the sure and soon return of Jesus, when sin and sorrow will be put to an end once and for all, and everlasting life with everlasting joy, peace, justice (and every other good thing you can think of) will be a reality.
This is the meaning behind the choir's slogan 'singing a new song'- it doesn't just sum up the choirs large original reprtoire, or even its innovation, but the ultimate goal, as described in the Book Of Revelation, sepaking of the redeemed in heaven: " they sing a new song".
